Two-alarm Building Fire - 400 S Washington

Date of Incident:
Saturday, December 1, 2012 - 4:00am

At 4:11 a.m. on December 1st,  Squad 2 was dispatched from quarters to check smoke in the area of E Lewis St and S Washington Ave. Upon arrival, Squad 2 reported smoke showing from a building on the southeast corner of that intersection. A regular alarm was struck and Squad 2 geared up for fire attack. Crews attempted to make entry through several overhead doors in the rear of the structure, but their ingress was blocked on every attempt by large amounts of debris. Due to the deteriorating condition of the building, the truss roof construction, and inability to make access, the fire was declared defensive and a second alarm was struck. Several hand lines and one tower were put into operation. The structure eventually suffered a total roof collapse as well as a collapse of the front wall. The fire was deemed under control around mid-morning, but a watch-line was kept in place throughout the day. Crews returned periodically the following night to extinguish hot-spots.
